Adam Adkins has been teaching social studies at Menifee County High School for five years. During that time, he also has coached the high school academic team.

Adkins’ academic teams have seen much success, winning back-to-back district championships.

He also has coached the high school’s History Bowl team and individual participants since 2011. The bowl team qualified for nationals in 2011 and 2012 and placed second in Kentucky State History Bowl Championships in February.

Adkins was recently named National Coach of the Year award for the National History Bee and Bowl and is Kentucky Teacher’s Leader of the Month.

He also coached the state junior varsity champion. Under Adkins’ guidance, then-sophomore Skyler Cantrell earned a top-10 finish in the national History Bowl competition.

Adkins said the History Bowl and Bee competitions allow students to excel in a subject with a wide variety of topics.

“From ancient history to current events, and from Civil War generals to Greek mythology, students can study to become experts in something they are excited about,” Adkins said.

These competitions also develop leadership skills, and Adkins said that helps students see success beyond the classroom in areas of taking initiative and further developing a love of learning and teamwork and time management skills.
Adkins believes that technology has taken education and leadership to a higher level in Kentucky.

“From greater access to resources, to more stimulating content presentation, our teachers are utilizing technology to make the classroom a more efficient and effective place,” he said.

“Menifee (County High) teachers utilize multi-media presentations for content, iPads for a variety of in-class projects and online resources regularly,” Adkins added. “Likewise, our students at Menifee have been taking command of new technology to showcase their knowledge and creativity in all content areas. Kentucky students are on the cutting edge in new innovations, and I’m confident they will be national leaders in this area.”
