“Go … Grow … Dayton!” This motto became the driving force within our district when Superintendent Jay Brewer took the helm of the Dayton Independent schools. After his first year as superintendent, the school district improved from the 26th percentile to the 58th percentile and each of the schools in the district, Lincoln Elementary School and Dayton High School, recorded growth.

The district’s focus has been on literacy and collaboration to provide opportunities to the students of Dayton Independent. The district worked with the United Way to bring the Bornlearning Academy to Lincoln Elementary School, and collaborated with the Northern Kentucky Education Council to offer the Big Box of Books and Reading One-to-One programs to the school’s students.

The Big Box of Books program is an evening event during which parents come to school with their child to learn parenting strategies focused on reading; each child receives a big box of books at the conclusion of the night. The Reading One-to-One program pairs adult mentors with struggling readers to read together for 30 minutes each week. These struggling readers have made significant gains in the areas of fluency and comprehension, including the young student that Brewer works with on a weekly basis.

The district is passionate about the growth of its students and is continuously looking for ways to reach out in partnership with community stakeholders to provide the best opportunities for our students’ future successes. One example is collaboration with another school district and a company called Torchprep to bring an ACT boot camp to a group of juniors at Dayton High School.

There also has been a focus to improve the district’s facilities. Renovation to the elementary school has improved the learning environment for teachers and students by bringing technology to the classroom. Among other improvements, collaboration with the city of Dayton resulted in a sidewalk and crosswalks for students to use to make their trip to and from school much safer.

The district and its leadership are all about putting kids first. Each and every day Superintendent Brewer is living Dayton Independent’s mission of “Inspiring, Engaging, and Growing Each of Our Students!”
