Since Superintendent Chuck Adams’ arrival in 2007, state assessment scores in the Spencer County school district have consistently improved with the district receiving a Distinguished/High Progress rating for the 2014-15 school year. The district has gone from being one of the lowest performing districts in the state to one of highest scoring in the Ohio Valley Educational Cooperative region.
Spencer County has engaged the community by embracing a customer service approach. Each school has developed an intentional public relations plan that has been instrumental in creating an inviting atmosphere for all stakeholders. Staff members are awarded the “Going the Distance Award” at monthly school board meetings for going above and beyond the normal expectations. As a result teachers in Spencer County truly feel appreciated for their commitment and dedication to students.
The focus on early childhood education supports the goal that all students will graduate from high school college- or career-ready. This has created additional preschool classrooms and all-day preschool opportunities for many students. A community-readiness committee has been developed and is committed to significantly increasing the number of kindergarten-ready students. Spencer County is determined to provide quality learning experiences to all children regardless of age or grade.
Spencer County has embraced a personalized learning approach for all students. Access to a variety of learning resources and development of individualized goals have led students to take ownership of their own learning. Students are provided access to a wide range of tools which provides them with a variety of methods for accessing, engaging and expressing their work.
A greater emphasis has been placed on technology and, as a result, digital learning has increased significantly over the past several years. Spencer County is striving to reach beyond the walls of the schools and blur the lines between the classroom and the real world to ensure that we are truly “Going the Distance for all Students!”
