Kentucky Science Teachers Association to host Feb. 24 summit

The Kentucky Science Teachers Association (KSTA) is hosting a virtual Kentucky Science Teaching Summit on Feb. 24 from 9 a.m.-4 p.m. ET using Zoom.

Higher education science/science education instructors, professional scientists, informal science professionals, tertiary science instructors and related-industry professionals are invited to join the summit.

As K-12 pre-service and in-service teachers are enhancing their practices to meet the intent of the Kentucky Academic Standards in Science, KSTA is working to best support teachers. KSTA’s mission is to promote and support effective and innovative science education throughout Kentucky.

While all who support K-12 science educators are welcome to attend, the goal for the summit is to have representation from each higher education institution across Kentucky as they incorporate interactive features for networking and learning from each other. Attendees will have the opportunity to submit a challenge and/or solution as a potential topic for a breakout session.

Compelling Challenges and Solutions
Submit a compelling challenge or solution. KSTA’s Summit Committee will review submissions and select challenges and solutions to address during the summit. Potential presenters should:

  • Submit a challenge that exists in higher education. Examples of challenges might include science teacher recruitment and retention, methods classes/hours for pre-service and professional development support for new teachers, lack of exposure to students during the past two years, lack of science expertise in elementary schools, etc. The deadline to submit is Jan. 2.
  • Submit a solution or strategy to the listed challenge. Include a brief description and link to more information if necessary. The deadline to submit is Jan. 2.
  • Solutions and strategies will be reviewed by the summit committee. Those that are selected will receive an invitation to present in early January.

Early-bird registration is open now through Jan. 31; regular registration starts Feb. 1.
