Gena Maley, an art teacher at Murray Middle School (Murray Independent), has been named a recipient of Artsonia’s 2019 Art Education Leadership Award. The award honors pioneers in the art education community who continuously inspire their peers and engage students.
Maley is one of 15 national winners of the inaugural award from Artsonia, which compiles an online collection of student art and works with teachers to create online school art galleries and student art portfolios.
“I am so honored to be recognized as a leader in arts education,” Maley said. “I am inspired to teach art because it nurtures creativity, exploration and personal expression. Art allows us to not only create but also appreciate the beauty in the world around us.”
Maley has worked with Artsonia for 17 of her 22 years as an art teacher. She is one of thousands of art teachers from more than 100 countries around the world who use Artsonia to showcase their student art, crowdsource lesson plans and help fundraise for their classrooms.
