Fayette teacher earns national Chinese language teachers’ group honor

Yan Wang, a teacher at Dixie Magnet Elementary School (Fayette County), is one of two national recipients of the 2019 Outstanding Chinese Teacher Award from the Chinese Language Association Secondary-Elementary Schools (CLASS), which commended her as a highly effective teacher and an excellent role model for K-12 Chinese teachers. CLASS recognized Wang in November during its annual convention and world languages expo in Washington, D.C.

“Her expertise and leadership skills have made a great impact on the Chinese language programs in Fayette County both within our public schools and community opportunities,” said Laura Roché Youngworth, the Fayette County schools’ world language content specialist and president of the Kentucky World Language Association.

Wang, who was born in Northeast China, has taught Chinese language and culture at Dixie Elementary since 2007. She also taught two years at Yates Elementary School. She also worked for the Lexington Chinese School as Chinese teacher, education coordinator, vice principal and board member for 16 years.

Earlier this fall, the National Network for Early Language Learning named Wang Kentucky’s Early Language Learning Teacher of the Year.
