The Kentucky Board of Education kicked off its examination of the state’s graduation requirements at its regular meeting April 11 with a national overview of what other states are doing to ensure their high school graduates can successfully transition to careers and college.

Kentucky Board of Education updated on new laws

At its regularly scheduled April meeting, the Kentucky Board of Education received an update on new education laws passed by the 2017 General Assembly. House Bill 520 allows non-religious public charter schools for the first time in Kentucky. Commissioner of Education Stephen Pruitt said work has already started at the Kentucky Department of Education to prepare for the establishment of charters.

Proposed CATS replacement unveiled

The state's proposed new accountability system would encompass more than how students perform on tests, according to a proposal presented to the Kentucky Board of Education.  The proposed model incorporates all aspects of school and district work and includes measures of principal and teacher effectiveness and school and district support.
