Kentucky Numeracy Counts

Applications are now open for the Kentucky Center for Mathematics (KCM) K-5 Numeracy Counts Teacher Academies and the Partnership Institute for Math and Science Education Reform (PIMSER) Numeracy Counts Administrator Academy.

The KCM Numeracy Counts Academy explores six mathematical domains with a focus on the development of fluency as defined by the Kentucky Academic Standards.

Participants will explore the ways in which accuracy, efficiency and flexibility apply to all domains of elementary mathematics while deepening their own content and pedagogical knowledge and strengthening a positive mathematical disposition. Participants will learn to better plan, teach, assess and communicate about elementary mathematics so that all students leave elementary school with fluency and a strong preparation for higher level mathematics.

The PIMSER Numeracy Counts Administrator Academy is designed to equip school leaders with the knowledge and skills necessary to support and sustain high-quality mathematics instruction in alignment with the Kentucky Numeracy Counts Act. This academy empowers administrators to become instructional leaders by deepening their understanding of effective mathematics teaching practices, fostering a culture of numeracy, and ensuring that both teachers and students are actively engaged in meaningful learning experiences.

High-quality mathematics instruction requires more than just procedural fluency; it emphasizes conceptual understanding, problem-solving, and student discourse. Administrators must recognize what effective math instruction looks like, understand the strategies teachers should employ, and support the development of classroom environments where students actively explore mathematical concepts. By participating in the academy, administrators will be better prepared to provide targeted feedback, allocate resources strategically, and lead their schools in achieving mathematical proficiency for all students.
