From KSBA Boardcast

The Kentucky Schools Boards Association (KSBA) and the state’s 174 public school systems will observe January as School Board Member Recognition Month in Kentucky by giving out the Calendar of Services to all board members and superintendents.

The 2011 Calendar of Services again will feature brief overviews of the association’s major services, a compilation of important dates and deadlines for school boards, and calendar pages with plenty of space for writing in one’s own appointments, birthdays, trips and other significant dates.

This year’s Calendar of Services also has a link to KSBA’s 75th anniversary. The association marks a meeting in 1936 as its historical date of establishment. Each month of the calendar will include a snippet of historical information on some event in Kentucky education that took place in 1936, as researched by KSBA Member Support Services staff.

The calendar also is enlivened by images produced by school district personnel that earned 2010 photography awards in the OASIS (Outstanding Achievement in School Information Services) Program sponsored by KSBA and the Kentucky School Public Relations Association.

As it has in the past, KSBA staff has produced a set of support materials that can be used by districts in any manner they choose to help tell the story of the contributions of their local board members. These materials will be provided directly to superintendents and members of the school public relations association and the Kentucky Association of Superintendents’ Administrative Assistants (KOSAA).

KSBA also would like to share how districts celebrate the school board’s contributions. Space will be devoted in two January editions of Boardcast (Jan. 11 and 25) for either a photograph of students, staff or local officials honoring board members, or a brief (200 words maximum) report on the celebration itself. E-mail stories or photos to Brad Hughes no later than 9 a.m. on either publication date.
