GoTeachKY names 22 teacher ambassadors for 2022
The Kentucky Department of Education (KDE) announced Oct. 26 that 22 teachers from across the Commonwealth have been selected as ambassadors for 2022.
School is a passion for new Floyd County superintendent Anna Shepherd
Anna Shepherd was named superintendent for Floyd County schools on July 26, replacing Danny Adkins, who resigned and is now superintendent of Woodford County. Awarded a four-year contract, Shepherd previously served as chief early childhood officer and interim superintendent in the district.
Sixteen new high schools get funding to start new KYTSA chapters
The Kentucky Technology Student Association (KYTSA) will start 16 new high school chapters this fall thanks to a generous donation from Stan and Karen Pigman. All 16 schools are in the southeast region of Kentucky and will receive funding to start and maintain an active KYTSA chapter.

Morehead State University’s (MSU’s) Volgenau College of Education announced a new scholarship program, the Appalachian Future Educators (AFE) Scholars Program, for new teacher candidates from Appalachian counties.
Adkins looking to provide career readiness to all students as Woodford County’s new superintendent
On July 1, Danny Adkins will start his new job as superintendent in Woodford County. He will succeed Scott Hawkins, who is retiring at the end of June after 13 years. Adkins has served as Floyd County superintendent since 2018.
24 Kentucky Valvoline Teacher Achievement Award winners named for 2021
The Kentucky Department of Education and Valvoline Inc. have selected 24 outstanding Kentucky educators as recipients of the 2021 Valvoline™ Teacher Achievement Awards (TAA). These teachers qualify to compete for the 2021 Kentucky Teacher of the Year Award which will be announced in October.
State champions crowned during Kentucky’s virtual STLP state championship ceremony
Kentucky’s K-12 Student Technology Leadership Program (STLP) State Championship had a different look this year. Due to the COVID-19 emergency, the state competition – normally held at Rupp Arena in Lexington and hosting around 15,000 students, teachers and family members – was presented virtually.

Elena Kamenetzky, a Japanese teacher at Eastern High School (Jefferson County), is the 2019 recipient of the Kentucky World Language Association Outstanding Teacher of the Year Award.
Retired physician receives Dr. Samuel Robinson Award
At its meeting June 5 in Frankfort, the Kentucky Board of Education presented the Dr. Samuel Robinson Award to Dr. Chandra Varia, a retired physician from Floyd County.
2019 STLP State Championship brings 12,000 students to Lexington
Nearly 12,000 K-12 students from across the state showed judges what they can do with technology in arts and STEM at the 2019 Student Technology Leadership Program (STLP) State Championship April 18 in Rupp Arena.
