The Kentucky Department for Public Health is announcing the winners of the 2023 Radon Poster and Video Contest.
Poster Contest
- 1st Place: “Radon Can Cause Lung Cancer,” made by Grayson, 12, School for The Creative and Performing Arts (Fayette County).
- 2nd Place: “Radon Protect Yourself,” by Kwonyul, 11, School for the Creative and Performing Arts (Fayette County).
- 3rd Place: “In Your Home,” by Benjamin, 14, Ramsey Middle School (Jefferson County)
Video Contest
- 1st Place: “Breaking News: Radon Gas!!!” by Ella, 17, Grace Christian Academy in Daviess County.
- 2nd Place: “The Invisible Killer,” by Catalina, 15, North Oldham High School (Oldham County).
- 3rd Place: “Radon… the ghost in your home,” by Lauren, 15, North Oldham High School (Oldham County).
The Kentucky Radon Program sponsored the contests to raise awareness about the potential dangers of radon and the importance of testing one’s home.
The program works in partnership with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to provide education and bring awareness to the health hazards caused by radon to the residents of Kentucky. Radon is a gas with life-threatening, serious effects on humans. It is the leading cause of lung cancer in non-smokers.
The poster contest was for students ages 9 to 14 years old with Visa gift card prizes awarded to the top three entries. Students created informative posters to help their communities understand the dangers of radon.
The video contest was for students ages 14 to 18 with scholarships awarded to the top three entries. Students created a commercial or public service announcement video that encourages residents to test or mitigate their homes for radon.
