Damien Sweeney and Micki Ray assume new positions at Kentucky Department of Education

Kentucky Department of Education (KDE) Commissioner Jason E. Glass announced that Damien Sweeney, Ed.D., and Micki L. Ray are assuming new roles at KDE beginning Sept. 15.  Sweeney will now serve as the director of diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) and Ray is now the chief academic officer, both in the Office of Teaching and Learning (OTL).

Student drawings show why teacher diversity matters in Kentucky

About a year ago, someone from the Kentucky Education Association reached out to our office and asked if we would like to display the drawings our public school students did as part of their Difference Makers Art Contest. As those drawings were recently being taken down, it got me thinking about how they connect to the department’s efforts on teacher diversity and teacher recruitment.

Semifinalists named for 2022 Kentucky Teacher of the Year

Ten outstanding teachers from across the state – four elementary, three middle and three high school – are semifinalists for the 2022 Kentucky Teacher of the Year award, the Kentucky Department of Education (KDE) and Valvoline Inc. announced on Aug. 2.
