The Kentucky Department of Education’s (KDE’s) School Counselor Advisory Council is realigning its priorities to gather more feedback from council members. During their meeting on Sept. 25, KDE leaders talked about wanting council meetings to focus more on gathering feedback from council members rather than listening to presentations from KDE staff.

Michelle Sircy, program coordinator for Comprehensive School Counseling in KDE’s Office of Teaching and Learning, said she wants council members’ voices to be heard more.

“It’s great for us to give you information, but what’s more important is for us to get information from you,” Sircy said. “You are in the schools, you’re boots on the ground, you see things that sometimes we may not see.”

At the end of the meeting, council members shared topics they would like to discuss in future meetings.

Council member Chloe Wilcher, representing Lincoln County Schools, said she wants to discuss how school counselors might be able to help students who leave public schools to be homeschooled.

Council member Antonio Meltin, representing Fayette County Public Schools, said he wants to talk about how school counseling best practices can be updated. Suzanne Gibbs, representing Corbin Independent School District, said she wants to discuss advocacy efforts around school counseling and increasing awareness within different school groups about how social-emotional health impacts student success.

The next council meeting will be on Nov. 18.
