Combined with her extensive experience in teaching, coaching and statewide leadership, Kristie’s expertise will continue to positively impact teaching and learning across Kentucky.”

In her new role, Mattingly said she looks forward to serving teachers, principals and district leaders as they engage students in rich math tasks that are both challenging and interesting. She is eager to support mathematics classrooms to develop conceptual understanding of key mathematical ideas through reasoning and problem solving.

“I am looking forward to supporting mathematics at the state level,” Mattingly said. “I truly believe every student across the state needs a high-quality curriculum where they see themselves as a doer of mathematics in their mathematics community.”

Mattingly said believes the goal for every Kentucky student is to succeed in high-quality mathematics work and have a positive mathematics disposition.

“As students move beyond applying a known rule or procedure and see that they can contribute and bring value, their dispositions and beliefs are shifted in a more positive direction,” Mattingly said.

The focus of her work at KDE will be to support the implementation of the Kentucky Academic Standards for Mathematics by providing professional learning, resources and technical assistance to educators and districts. Her work will focus on building the capacity of districts to provide rigorous, grade-level mathematics instruction for all students.

Through her role as a secondary mathematics program consultant, Kristie shares the excitement of Kentucky stakeholders that are investing in statewide initiatives designed to ensure that Kentucky students achieve mathematics proficiency. Reflecting on the opportunities ahead, Mattingly said, “This is a wonderful time to be a mathematics educator in the state of Kentucky.”
